One of the reasons as to why self-published books struggle to sell is because simply no one knows about them. After all, there are millions of books in the Nook store (and probably millions more in the more popular Kindle store), and sorting through all of them to find yours is virtually impossible for a casual reader to do without the help of some promotion.
But how, exactly, do you promote? many may ask. There are many tiers to promoting yourself, including via social media, sharing and spreading your book, and word of mouth, but blogging about them all would end up in a very long post, so I’ve decided to make it a series and split the different parts and ideas into different posts. This one will cover the basic tips of marketing.
First, you should find your targeted audience. This may seem obvious, but could be a fact that is neglected in a rush to get more and more readers. However, one should always remember that, if one is writing a romance, their time, resources, and energy is best spent on fans of romance novels instead of general fictions fans, a large percentage of which might not even look at your book.
Second, don’t be afraid to talk about your book! Without talking about your book, how will people know it’s there? Using social media, community events, and more, you can get the word out and the interest level high. However, don’t overdo it-desperate comments and obsessive posts on social media are most effective in scaring off customers, not attracting them.
And finally, don’t forget to unplug. While the internet is great for connecting with readers all over the world, don’t forget the people in your community! Find out what kind of events your neighborhood or community has, and get involved! You’d be surprised what you can find to participate in, and the more your name gets out, the better it is for your sales!
Hope this was helpful. :)
